About MU Student News

MU Student News is the student-run news publication of MU. Everything you read here — reporting, features, photography, reviews and opinion — is produced by students, for the MU community.

Our mission

We exist to keep the MU community informed about the decisions, events and people that shape life on campus. We aim to report accurately and fairly, to explain how decisions are made and who makes them, and to give students a place to develop their voices in public.

Why student journalism matters

A school is a community of hundreds of people making decisions together — about money, rules, events and priorities. Student journalism records those decisions, asks questions about them and makes sure the answers are available to everyone, not only to the people in the room. It is also one of the best trainings there is: reporters here learn to interview, verify, write clearly and take responsibility for what they publish.

Editorial independence

MU Student News is editorially independent. Coverage decisions are made by student editors. Our faculty adviser teaches journalistic practice and reviews our policies with us, but does not decide what we cover or approve stories before publication. When we make mistakes, we correct them openly under our corrections policy.

What we cover

  • Campus News — administration, policy, projects and events
  • Academics — classes, examinations, research and study life
  • Student Life — the people and traditions of the MU community
  • Sports — MU teams, matches and athletes
  • Arts and Culture — theatre, music, exhibitions, books, film and food
  • Opinion — signed columns and staff editorials, clearly labelled

How the newsroom works

Story ideas come from anywhere — reader tips, meeting agendas, noticeboards, or a writer’s own curiosity. Section editors assign and edit stories, the managing editor checks facts and style, and the editor-in-chief signs off before publication. We publish continuously during the school year.

Get involved

We welcome story tips, letters, corrections and new staff members at any point in the year. Visit the Submit a Story page to send us a tip, or read about joining the staff. Our editorial standards are published in full in our Editorial Policy.
