MU hosted its annual student leadership conference on Saturday, welcoming delegates from nine schools — the most in the event’s history — for a day of workshops aimed at the unglamorous machinery of student organisations: meetings, budgets, handovers and burnout.
The conference, organised by the student council with this year’s theme “Lead Something That Outlasts You,” deliberately avoided motivational keynotes in favour of practical sessions. The most oversubscribed workshop, “Meetings People Don’t Dread,” ran three times.
“Every school’s council reinvents the same wheels every year because the people with the knowledge graduate,” said conference chair Kwame Osei. “The whole day is really about writing things down.”

Delegates voted to make the conference’s shared materials — templates for agendas, budgets and handover documents — openly available to all participating schools, hosted by the rotating organiser.
Next year’s conference will be hosted by one of the visiting schools, with MU sending a delegation for the first time as guests rather than organisers.
The handover problem, quantified
The conference’s theme was chosen after the organising committee surveyed participating schools’ councils and found a striking pattern: on average, less than a third of each council’s working knowledge — supplier contacts, budget history, what failed before and why — survived a leadership handover. One school reported rediscovering, two years late, that it already owned a sound system. The handover-document workshop ended with each delegation drafting the first page of their own document on the spot, a deliverable Osei called “the only conference outcome that can’t be forgotten on the bus home.”
The day ended with the conference’s only plenary: a rapid session in which each delegation named one thing it would change within a month, recorded publicly for next year’s follow-up. MU’s pledge, delivered by Osei: publish the council’s full committee structure and contact points on the portal, “because you cannot join what you cannot find.”
