Welcome Week at the University of Missouri continued Sunday, Aug. 23, with First Class, an academic convocation designed to introduce students to the resources and support available as they begin their Mizzou journey.
The Missouri School of Journalism shared details of the event, which was scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Hearnes Center. The gathering brought together university leaders, students and members of the Mizzou community for an afternoon focused on starting the academic year with encouragement and guidance.
David Novak Featured as Keynote Speaker
David Novak, BJ ’74, was announced as the special keynote speaker for First Class. Novak is the co-founder and retired chairman and CEO of Yum! Brands, and his appearance highlighted the event’s focus on leadership, education and professional development.
University President Mun Choi was also scheduled to speak during the convocation. Amy M. Knopps, director of Marching Mizzou, was expected to take part as well, adding another perspective from the university’s student and campus community.
Marching Mizzou was scheduled to perform during the event, providing a musical component to the Welcome Week program.
The Missouri School of Journalism also had a strong presence at First Class. Journalism seniors Tyson Ellison and Hailey Hester were selected to serve as emcees for the event.
Tyson Ellison Celebrates 21st Birthday
The event also marked a special day for Ellison, who was celebrating his 21st birthday on Aug. 23. In addition to his role as an emcee, Ellison was taking part in an Instagram takeover for the Missouri School of Journalism.
Students and followers were invited to follow the J School’s Instagram stories and submit questions as Ellison shared his perspective during the celebration.
First Class was part of a larger series of Welcome Week activities designed to help new and returning students settle into campus life and prepare for the academic year.
The Missouri School of Journalism encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunities and support available throughout their time at Mizzou. The event also reflected the school’s emphasis on community, student involvement and preparation for future careers.
The Aug. 23 program allowed students to hear from university leaders and accomplished alumni while also celebrating the beginning of another academic year at Mizzou.
