Columbia Police Department officers, working alongside University of Missouri Police, spent the weekend responding to a wave of complaints in the East Campus neighborhood near Mizzou.
The department says its officers dealt with multiple nuisance parties, people blocking streets, heavy littering, and instances of open containers and minors in possession of alcohol.
In a Facebook post, CPD said officers have already handed out numerous warnings to residents and partygoers in the area. Now, the department says it is moving forward with citations for those who continue to violate the rules.
Officers Shift From Warnings to Citations
According to the post, police had given ample opportunity for people to correct their behavior before enforcement escalated. “We have issued many, many warnings but now we are starting to issue citations,” the department wrote, adding that it hopes residents will “spread the word” to avoid further tickets.
East Campus is a historically popular gathering spot for Mizzou students, especially at the start of the fall semester, and is home to many of the university’s fraternity and sorority houses.
The neighborhood typically sees a spike in activity during the first few weeks of classes as new and returning students settle back into Columbia.
Community Reaction Split in the Comments
The post drew a wide range of responses from residents. Several commenters defended the students, with one Uber driver writing that the current generation is more responsible than past ones, pointing out that many attendees are involved in fundraisers and charity work that benefit the community.
Others pushed back, arguing police resources could be better spent elsewhere in Columbia.
One commenter said there is “a lot scarier stuff going down in CoMo every day” than a pre-semester gathering. Another user called for citations to also target businesses or individuals who may be supplying alcohol to underage students, specifically naming local bars as a concern.
What Comes Next for East Campus
CPD has not detailed how long the increased patrols and citation efforts will continue, though similar enforcement pushes have historically run through the first few weekends of the semester as move-in activities and welcome week events wrap up.
Residents in the East Campus area are encouraged to keep noise, street blockages, and littering to a minimum in the coming weeks as police maintain their presence in the neighborhood.
